Why I’m Choosing Not to Celebrate Halloween: For Me and My Family

This isn’t about judging anyone else or trying to change minds it’s simply about what feels right for me and my family as Christians. Over time, I’ve learned that following Christ sometimes means stepping away from things that don’t align with what I want to invite into my home or spirit.
For years, Halloween was just “fun” costumes, candy, carving pumpkins. But the more I learned about its deeper roots and the way it often glorifies fear, darkness, and spiritual confusion, the more it began to feel uneasy in my heart. I couldn’t shake that sense that it just didn’t fit with the peace, light, and purpose I want to nurture in my family.
I want my home to be a place filled with life and light not fear. I want my kids to know that they don’t have to participate in everything the world celebrates to still have joy, fun, and belonging.
Instead of focusing on what we’re saying “no” to, we’ve decided to focus on what we’re saying “yes” to family time, gratitude, kindness, and joy. We can still enjoy the season the fall weather, apple picking, baking, and togetherness without engaging in the parts that don’t feel right to our faith.
This isn’t about being “better than” anyone else. It’s just about being intentional. About letting our faith shape our choices instead of the world’s trends.
At the end of the day, I want my kids to grow up knowing that it’s okay to stand apart, to live with conviction, and to choose light in a world that sometimes celebrates the opposite.
“Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.”
- Ephesians 5:11
